The joy of discovering a new song by my favorite band, The Cure. I had to look twice since I’d never heard of this song, Harold & Joe. It was pure joy to have this surprise pop on as I drove home :)

This is our second time seeing Conan Gray live. The first time was in Baltimore when he did an exclusive acoustic set. This go-round, we went to Philly, where he put on quite the show. The theatrics, in addition to the performance, were fantastic!

My sister got me this focused study on Job for Christmas, and I’ve really been enjoying it. His rock bottom has reshaped how I understand the lows in my own life. It has also validated a lot of my feelings, the confusion and pain, when I think about things that have turned for the worse in my life. Our existence is not a neat, tidy lesson, and sometimes we are left to wonder.

Spring is here & my kids were able to plant their fairy garden. They even added some new fun features throughout, including the froggy and welcome sign. Dollar Tree has some great, inexpensive gems for a garden.

Originally, I came across a program called Love for Our Elders and thought one of my kids, who adores the elderly, might be interested. Older generations seem to speak to her heart, whereas mine has always been drawn to children. This time around, though, she chose a different way to devote her time to God.

I’ll admit I have always been a little nervous around the elderly. They intimidate me. Still, I couldn’t quite get the program off my mind. In the end, it felt like something I was meant to do, something that also aligned with my desire to bring more analog, unplugged moments into my day.

So I spent 40 days writing 40 letters to 40 different seniors.

There was a sense of peace in having that devoted time, sitting down each day with a pen, a quiet moment, and the intention to connect. My family gave me the space to step away, to think, and to write, which was special to me, too.

I didn’t just write the letters. I made each one personal. I included a few stickers and a little wallet coin for each of them, and I loved sending small, tangible keepsakes. I even tucked a cool stamp I had recently received into one person’s envelope after they mentioned a love of stamp collecting.

Each person’s bio shared bits of their life, including their hobbies, personalities, and sometimes hardships. Some stories pulled at my heartstrings, but most lifted my spirits and made me smile.

Some loved old Westerns; others preferred true crime. Some were avid readers, while others found joy in gardening. Some lived independently, while others relied on the support of family and friends. Learning about their lives, their joys, and their losses felt deeply comforting.

It also led me to reflect on my own life as I shared the things we had in common. Memories surfaced as I wrote, and even those felt like a quiet form of praise to God. In the end, it became far more fulfilling than I ever expected.

I plan to continue, though probably not every day. I hope to write at least a handful of letters each month.

The Girl in Alfred Hitchcock’s Shower //I got this novel for Christmas from my parents, and after falling in love with the movie Psycho, I was eager to dive in. As soon as I started, I realized I had to start over because this was the type of novel I wanted to treat as a textbook, highlighting all the things. If you’re a fan or just curious about the movie Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock, Old Vegas, Hugh Hefner, The Bouncing Ball Strangler, and all that retro stuff, this is an incredible book of storytelling and fun facts. There is a slight plot twist at the very end that I saw left some readers disappointed, but not me. It has become one of my all-time favorite novels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Pearl // I’m gutted. I know John Steinbeck writes hauntingly sad stories, so I was naive to think this novella would be any different. If you are in need of a cautionary tale with an unhappy ending, this is for you. Next up, Of Mice & Men. I’m a glutton for punishment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

A Wrinkle in Time // We finished up the Stranger Things series, and I just knew our next novel would be A Wrinkle in Time, since the Duffer Brothers included it as such a strong theme this season. I remember reading it in school, but couldn’t remember the details, so this was a fun re-read for me. We skipped the movie because it does not fit the novel at all. Waste of time, in my opinion. The book, though, is fantastic. A kid-driven adventure where they have to save their father and the universe from IT. It was fun to tie it back to Stranger Things with Camazotz and Holly Wheeler’s character. I’ll be posting a book club unit for free over on happyheartsocial if you’re interested. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Roses // A dark, unpredictable comedy that has you laughing one minute and gasping the next! It does have an unhappy ending, so if you’re watching it expecting a rom-com, think again. Thing is, I absolutely loved it. I loved not knowing any of what was to come. I loved the cast. I loved the unfortunate ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Best in Show // An oldie, but goodie. With the passing of Catherine O’Hara, I decided to show my kids this film. They know O’Hara well from Beetlejuice, Home Alone, & Schitt’s Creek. It’s a mockumentary-style movie that follows several couples as they enter their pampered pooches into the dog show for best breed. It is funny, witty, and naughty. Loved it. Next up, A Mighty Wind. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Eternity // I chose this movie thinking it was a romcom, and after several minutes, I wondered if it was in fact a psychological thriller. Not so much. It does have romance, and it does have a sense of humor, but it is a complete rollercoaster. The conflict is heavy, and you’ll change your mind many times about who you’re rooting for several times throughout. The ending did not disappoint and lingers in your mind long after. It’s an original, and I really enjoyed how it made you think outside the box. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Solo Mio // I loved every single second of this movie and am so glad I went to the theater to see it. It is the best romcom I have seen in a long time. I am a Jonathan Roumie fan and wondered if I’d be able to see him as anything other than Jesus from The Chosen. Oh yes, I could. He was so funny in this role, and with a wardrobe and accent change, it was easy to see him as this new lovable character. The entire setting is in Italy, and beautiful to watch as they endure silly little conflicts along the way. Highly recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

What I Made

Candles (pictured above): We created candles using second-hand glass (old ashtrays, crystal dishes, bowls, etc.), melted wax, added scented essential oils (I chose strawberry), and then I ordered a collection of gems and crystals to add in layers to the candle dishes. They all turned out so beautifully & smell delicious! I hope to burn mine when I journal to add some coziness to the task.

The starlings… I’ve told my kids that when I pass, look for me among the starlings. Their murmurations are beautiful, and fun fact: “The European Starling's introduction to North America was part of a Shakespeare enthusiast's plan to bring all birds mentioned in Shakespeare to America.”

Like many people, I focus on a phrase or word to guide me through the year.

Ones that have stayed with me over the years include:

• Do it for God and do it with excellence.

• Don’t take things for granted.

• Don’t take things too seriously.

• Actually, I can.

I’ve often found these phrases grounding and empowering through life changes. Going into this year, I knew right away what I wanted to focus on:

Be Selective

I don’t mean selective as in rigid or closed off, but selective in a way that stays attentive and responsive to God’s leading.

And when I started sorting through why I chose that phrase, a funny thing happened; another one quietly tagged itself to it.

I know I want to be selective about who I let into my space, how I spend my time, and what I consume. By being selective, I can choose how I show up for God, for my family, for myself every day.

I want more creativity and learning, which means I need less disruption. That requires letting go of mindless habits and distractions that no longer serve me, making room for the things that do.

As simple as this sounds, it’s harder in practice.

I hope to add more of the following to my day-to-day: studying my Bible, praying more intentionally, writing, and, honestly, resting. I want to continue to sit around our firepit, without devices, and talk. I want to sit across the table from my kids, coloring in our matching books while drinking coffee and steamed milk.

That desire for more intentional living is what led me to take Lent more seriously last year, and I want to attach that practice to my everyday routine.

Over the past two years, I’ve chosen to step away from certain social platforms that no longer feel right. In 2025, I deleted Twitter/X. In 2026, Facebook and Threads followed.

Being selective, I’m learning, isn’t about control at all. It’s about discernment and obedience, about noticing what God is inviting me into and what He’s asking me to release.

Instagram, for now, has earned its place. It continues to meet my criteria by connecting me, inspiring me visually, and bringing more joy than noise.

I also recently stepped away from my writing group. It wasn’t the right fit. Letting go wasn’t about abandoning creative community, but about making room for spaces that feel more aligned. Being selective often looks like letting go and making room for a creative connection that feels honest and sustaining. I do plan to find a new writing group soon, because I genuinely value the community and feedback.

In the meantime, I continue to write on Substack, which is full of diverse ideas, storytelling, and photos. For now, my page is open to the public. My priority is to grow a subscriber list of real, engaged people.

All of this sounds really nice and all, but as I sat with these thoughts, I kept hearing a quiet reminder, one that both grounds and challenges my desire for control:

If God says so…

If I’ve learned anything from my life and its surroundings, it’s that not all goes according to plan. Sometimes that’s for the best. Sometimes it means rough waters. I am not in control.

So I still plan to be selective and weed out what doesn’t add quality to my life, making room for what does, but I also want to stay open to the unexpected and accept that I will do what I think is best 😉…if God says so…

Thrift shopping has become a favorite pastime of mine over the last few years, and I’ve found some really fun stuff that adds character to our home.

In participation with analog life challenge, I thought it’d be fun to highlight some of my best finds and their uses.

Pictured below is a wooden wall sconce with carved flowers that I immediately fell in love with. Our home decor could be described as Boho Cottagecore, so this was a perfect fit for the wall in our foyer. Its green paint accents our whimsical wallpaper beautifully. Knowing that a lit candle would be too dangerous, I tucked one of my battery-operated ones into it to add some ambiance to the hallway.

The most recent purchase that makes me so happy is the wooden framed mirror (pictured below on the left). It is heavy, solid, and in perfect condition. I chose to hang it above my dresser. This would have easily cost at least $50 at a local home store, but I got it for $10! I love a good deal :)

Another affordable wooden find was this peg rack hanging in our laundry room. It was perfect for hanging the dog’s toy bags, aprons, and odds and ends.

Beyond furniture and decor, second-hand glassware is always a steal. They were all $2 or less. I gathered the collection below for an upcoming candle-making project, but I’ve also seen old ashtrays and bowls purchased to use as flower pot drain trays. Repurposing them this way adds an additional pretty element to the plants.

Of course, almost my entire library is pre-loved. There is a local bookshop as big as a department store that has an incredible selection. I have so many books on my To-Be-Read list because I can’t help but leave with an armload every time we go. Do any novels stand out to you that you love or want to read, too?

The majority of my record collection is also used. It’s always a bit of a risk since some records are scratched. Still, I’ve had more issues with new vinyl than old. The old-school quality really is top-notch. I keep a list in my notes app of records I’m on the hunt for, but most of the time it’s a surprise what I come home with!

Some of my more unique thrifted finds include the old school desk below, which sits in my office. It’s used for storage, and I set up my photography light box on top to snap images of my designs on Happy Heart Goodies.

This old wooden student chair from a school also came in handy as a sweet stand for one of my plants. I always enjoy a nostalgic piece. It’s nice to think of the memories that stem from any of these pieces. I imagine the schools where the desk and chairs came from were closed down or upgraded to newer items, but I’m not sure.

My most favorite piece I’ve found thrifting, though, is my gold shelf! I scored this several years ago, and it has been the main staple for my living area. The displays on these shelves have been rearranged in so many different ways, but no matter what they always bring a lot of joy!

There’s a movement this year to pursue all things analog. I always have, but am embracing its trend by joining a group that is documenting it all this year.

of Little Truths has invited anyone who wants to participate to set aside the digital and pick up the analog.

I love tangible things. I love printed images, vinyl, gardening, decorating, baking, coloring books, handwritten letters, stickers, physical novels bought from second-hand bookstores or checked out from the library, handwritten planners, journaling, and thrifting.

However, I love the digital side of things, too.

I take my images with my DSLR or iPhone. I am an Amazon Prime member. I occasionally read a novel on my iPad using the Kindle app. I use a digitally shared calendar with my family. I blog our lives. I design using Procreate. And I share it all on my social media.

For me, it’s about balance and moderation, like most things in life.

I like the “Grandma” way of things most, though…candles lit, music playing, creating something hands-on, often with others by my side, inviting fun conversation.

I am happy to participate in this project and highlight some of my favorite ideas, places, and things. It doesn’t stray far from what I’ve already shared on my Substack, but hopefully I’ll be more intentional and consistent about it- two words I’m focusing on this year.

A couple of days before Christmas, a news alert popped up on my phone stating there had been an active shooter at our local DMV. An officer was working overtime when a monster targeted and executed him. There was no motive. It was an act of pure evil.

The next day, as I scrolled through Facebook, the victim’s photo appeared. When I realized we had crossed paths, my stomach sank, and it has weighed heavily on my heart since.

We have added his name to our prayers every night since. He was a hero.

Matthew “Ty” Snook.

Delaware is a small state, and we don’t have many personal connections here, so for this to hit so close to home was difficult to process. We only met him once, but as we turn the corners in each space of our home, we see reminders of his life.

When we met Ty, we were buying his home. He and his significant other, at the time, were moving to a bigger piece of property.

We shared a love of bulldogs, which we were told gave us an edge over the other buyers. He was also a state trooper, which resonated with us, considering the majority of my family are LEOs.

When an issue arose in the purchasing process, at the height of the seller’s market, they could have easily passed on our offer. Instead, they negotiated with us and waited an extra month until things got sorted out, and we could close on the house.

He was soft-spoken, well-composed, and kind. We talked briefly about his job and the house before thanking one another, shaking hands, and parting ways.

It was a small interaction with a big impact. The house he sold us has become our happiest home. It brings us so much comfort.

Little things like his name decal on the garage wall, the blackout curtains from working nights, and the red, white, and blue painted basement are all still here. We were told those colors were chosen because he was a fan of Captain America. We chose to keep them because they are the colors of the Washington Capitals hockey team, but now they’ll represent both in his honor.

I continue to see vigils throughout the state, full of people who knew him, crossed paths with him, or came to admire his heroism after learning that he jumped in front of someone to save their life, losing his own.

We have lit our home up with the thin blue line honoring the fallen officer, which will stay lit through the rest of this month.

God works in mysterious ways that we may never fully understand, but what I can make sense of is this: I believe Ty was an angel on Earth and will continue to be the angel he was, guarding his family and community from the Heavens.

Awake // I’m not a loyal follower of her online, but I was intrigued by Jen Hatmaker’s story since someone I love dearly is experiencing something similar.
It highlights her relationships with her ex-husband, friends, parents, & the church.
She brings you along on her rollercoaster of emotions and shares some advice that got her through it all. I think she shows a lot of grace toward her ex, who betrayed her after 26 years of marriage.
I know her husband did his own little rebuttal, but it doesn’t matter now. He chose to humiliate his family and children. 💔 She proves that he did not break her, tho, & I love that for her. That’s the point.
Overall, it is uplifting- just a bit of her shared self-help journey through it all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Eleanor + Park // Rainbow Rowell grabbed at my heartstrings with the beautifully written novel. I know there is controversy over parts of the book, but I think it opens up a discussion surrounding the idea of “know better, do better” and that we shouldn’t censor historical fiction.
Aside from that, the themes of love, family, and class are deep. It is set in the 1980s, and in my opinion, it paints quite a realistic picture of that era. Reading Eleanor + Park’s story felt so familiar. I’m also a huge fan of New Wave music, and this novel explored some of my favorite bands, so I appreciated that.
The hardships the characters endure are mature, and this novel would probably resonate more with older teens. It offers some exposure to real-world problems their peers may be experiencing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Wrong Paris // So good we watched it twice, lol! This light-hearted take on a reality dating TV show was pretty funny. They included all the “types” you see in the real versions, but kept it classy. The ending was a smart conclusion, too. Recommend for one of those lazy Saturday nights where you want a good giggle. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Haunted Hotel // Not appropriate in the funniest way. I’m glad there is a second season on the way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Emma // I’ve seen Pride & Prejudice & Little Women, which are cute, but I haven’t truly loved an Austen story until this one. Emma is yet another meddling young lady who wants to play matchmaker, only to fail and get herself tangled up in conflict. It is exactly as advertised: Clever. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Miss. Austen // I love Keeley Hawes in The Durrells, so I had to see her performance in Miss. Austen. This short series follows the notorious burning of Jane Austen’s letters by her sister Cassandra. While that fact is true, the reasoning is imagined up by the author of the books the series is based on. I found it to be pretty good. Some of the supporting characters were more interesting than Cassandra herself, which made it worth watching. There is plenty of PG romance pulled from Jane’s letters to keep you interested, as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Dancing with the Stars // Corey Feldman got me to watch, but after he got voted off, Robert Irwin kept me watching. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I thought I was a summer baby. It was only this year that I realized I’m not. I’m actually nine days short of being born within the summer solstice. I’d defined my own seasonal calendar all these years.

It makes me wonder what other truths I’m so sure of that are not so true. Time will tell, but I am now aware that I am a child of spring, birthed between winter and summer, nowhere near my favorite season, autumn, but still symbolic of all my favorite ideas: renewal, growth, and hope.

Maybe it makes sense that I clung to summer with the warmth of the sun, dips in the pool, and longer days, but I think I might’ve overdosed on it during our time in Florida, where the air felt suffocating, the humidity relentless, the bugs biting, the moisture pooling, and the skin burning.

It’s funny how it was my dislike of the frigid cold that prompted us to head south in the first place. I now know that too much of a good thing can ruin itself.

Since moving back north, I’m okay with the brief bit of summer because I know the cooler seasons soon follow. I look forward to chilly temps, blustery winds, puffy jackets, firesides, hot tubs, snowbanks, buttery blankets, spooky season, changing leaves, and cozy feels.

I’d missed the cold all those years while we were away. Oscar Wilde put it perfectly when he wrote, "He did not hate the winter now, for he knew that it was merely the spring asleep, and the flowers were resting.”

His words echo how I’ve come to see the rhythm of the year, and I find gratitude in each season.

In the winter, we rest.

In the spring, we plan.

In the summer, we hustle.

In the fall, we recharge.

Each season resets me, stirring up wonder that I can now appreciate.

One afternoon, we finally made it to a local state park to see the second-largest waterfall in the state, a place that had been on my bucket list for years.

It was a short trek from the lot to the waterfall, but the girls had already begun to get the ick over the terrain (even though it was flat), walking through the streams (even though they had the proper water shoes), and the bugs (it’s their territory).

At one point, I psyched them out as I walked ahead of them, veered toward a steep incline, and pretended we were going to be climbing up it. Their reaction was utter shock, like, “No way!”

It gave me a good belly laugh.

Once we arrived, I wasn’t daring enough to go under the waterfall and get soaked, but others were, and it was fun to watch them.

On a nearby boulder that overshadowed us, I noticed a young couple spreading out a picnic blanket with snacks while talking to each other about who knows what. I could sense the vibe was one of love and joy in how they interacted. It was a sweet sight.

We traipsed through the water when one of my girls underestimated how slippery the stones under our feet were and slipped. She was fine and got a good giggle out of the embarrassment. We went ahead and found a large enough rock for them to safely pop and squat on.

There was so much to take in and see. Aside from the lush waterfall that kept me in awe, there were squirmy fishies surrounding our toes, beautiful green moss growing on the rocks, the overhanging cliff, and, of course, the people. People watching never gets old, and I mean that in the best way.

As I moved closer to the waterfall to take photos, the same young man from the picnic started to walk down the boulder toward me and politely asked if we might have a lighter. We didn’t, and he was disappointed. I couldn’t figure out what he needed it for out here, but it seemed important.

I turned back to enjoying the falls and pointed out the erosion under the cliffs to the girls and wondered what lurked in the dark depths of it.

I noticed that the young couple had walked higher up onto the boulder to a wrap-around path that led them toward the top of the falls. I turned my back for a quick second when I heard a woman’s scream followed by uncontrollable laughter. The young man’s girlfriend had endured the icy cold water and reacted loudly. Her boyfriend was holding her hand, steady as she squealed and laughed.

Once I realized she was safe, I relaxed, looked at my husband, and we smiled at one another.

“She’s braver than I am,” I said.

Watching them made me think about how wonderful this spot must be for a date. I asked my girls, and they didn’t necessarily agree, not being one with nature and all, but they got where I was coming from. It was thoughtful and not typical.

I glanced over to the boulder where the young man’s girlfriend was sprawling out her blanket and getting into a comfortable spot with her journal. She began writing when I saw the young man light up a stick of incense beside her. Ah, that explains why he needed the lighter! The other men who were swimming in the falls must have been of help to him.

How incredibly special that was! He set the mood for her to escape into her thoughts in the most serene setting, while he went back into the falls and swam.

Watching them reminded me how love can be both simple and extraordinary. A picnic, a journal, a waterfall. It didn’t take much, but it felt like a grand gesture. Though my girls may have rolled their eyes at the idea of this area being a ‘perfect date spot,’ I think they could still appreciate the young man’s thoughtful gesture.

I love the solitude of nature, but I also love seeing people at their best. Today, I lucked out and got to experience both.

The Idaho Four // An excellent read for anyone curious about the case and the lives of the four kids who tragically lost their lives. It is 138 chapters, 430 pages of small, intriguing details. It paints a vision of how they lived their lives to the fullest and had great plans for the future. It does give insight into Kohberger, as well, and his childhood. There is a laundry list of things I learned & I could write about regarding the case, but it’s worth reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I’m Glad my Mom Died // She was so used & abused & I’ll never see an episode of iCarly or Sam + Cat the same way again. There is no reprieve from the sadness. Every relationship she entered into was a nightmare, aside from Miranda Cosgrove, whom she speaks very highly of. I planned to watch her new series on Apple, based on her book, but how can they portray these sad, graphic scenes? No amount of humor can mask this poor girl’s pain. I am glad she got to share her story & I hope the trauma dump helped her heal and that her entire future is all blessings and good things. ❤️‍🩹 ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (3 stars only bc of the graphicness of it. If you skip those, the story itself is 5).

Leanne // This was funny! It’s your typical Chuck Lorre sitcom, so I knew it would take a light-hearted approach to divorce and other more serious topics. Sometimes we need a reminder that things will be okay and that there is humor in the hardship…eventually. Leanne does a good job of that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Ruby Red Handed // Another light-hearted view. This documentary detailed the investigation into who stole the Ruby Red slippers from the Minnesota Judy Garland Museum. I enjoyed how they created each chapter & revealed how it went down. Very fun little details. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 // I won’t call this one light-hearted, but silly-stupid. It documents how the Storm Area 51 party came to be and all the behind-the-scenes fiascos that occurred because of it. Growing up in Vegas and being very familiar with Area 51, I found this interesting. There is some spicy content, so be warned. Alien lovers are weirdos. ⭐️⭐️/5

Thelma // I was pleasantly surprised by this movie starring June Squibb, who we adore from the movie Hubie Halloween (one I should’ve mentioned in my favorite Spooky Watches post). Squibb embarks on an adventure in this sweet comedy after discovering someone scammed her out of $10K. She lets nobody get in her way to get it back. At ninety-five years old, Squibb is on point in her acting. We loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Unknown Number // WOAH. I’d heard what happened in the news in real-time, but that still didn’t prepare me for the text messages and destruction that they caused. Highly recommend watching this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I love when the smallest encounters live rent-free in my brain, quietly lingering until I realize they’ve made an impact worth sharing.

I recently took my girls to see the musician, Conan Gray, play an acoustic set in Baltimore. My girls made me a fan several years ago when his hit Heather was released. He was wonderful and sounded just like his recordings, which I always appreciate. The crowd was small, and he interacted with his fans like they were close friends. It was sweet to witness.

The sweetness continued after the show as I stood in line, with my girls, for the little photobooth inside the record store. The concert itself had been outside, in the concrete lot, and now only a handful of us were being let into the shop at a time since Conan was still upstairs gathering his things.

As we waited, my girls ran off to catch a glimpse of him coming down the stairway.

The young man in front of us watched as his girlfriend skipped off with a huge smile, eager to see Conan up close, too. They looked to be in their early twenties, and he was smiling ear to ear just watching her.

Since we were at a standstill until she returned, I glanced between my husband, who was digging through vinyl around the store, and my girls to make sure they were all good. That’s when the young man caught me by surprise, striking up a conversation.

“Are you familiar with Conan Gray?” he asked.

“Oh yes! My girls introduced me to him, and I became a big fan.”

“Oh, really? I just learned his music today. My girlfriend likes him, and I was able to get us these tickets to see him.”

“Did you enjoy it? He sounds just like his record.”

“Yeah, I did!”

“It was so hot out there, though.”

“Yea, look at me lookin’ like a maintenance worker,” he joked, pointing out that he was wearing long sleeves and slacks on a 90-degree day.

“Oh my gosh, it was way too hot! I noticed a young kid with a hoodie, jeans, and a beanie on, and I was so worried for them. Thankfully, it’s cool in here.”

My husband wandered over, wondering what our girls were up to. I explained they were waiting for Conan to appear and introduced him to who I now knew was Reggie.

Reggie caught me by surprise again when he reached out to shake my husband’s hand. His politeness was so natural.

I carried on the conversation, asking,

“What kind of music do you typically listen to?”

“Oh, well, my Dad tells me I’m an old man trapped in a young man’s body with my taste in music.”

“Well, that’s okay, he is the exact opposite! A little kid in a grown-up body,” as I pointed at my husband, making all of us laugh.

Reggie continued answering my question, “I like older singers like Frank Sinatra.”

“Oh wow! I enjoy that music, too. Have you heard of Leon Bridges? He has that oldies vibe to him, too.”

“I have!”

“I’ve seen him in concert three times now and he does not disappoint.”

Just then, Conan came downstairs and departed the store, waving happily to his fans.

Reggie and his girlfriend ducked into the photobooth, their laughter spilling out between the clicks of the camera. When they emerged, still smiling, we exchanged quick goodbyes and agreed how nice it had been to talk.

When we left the record store, it felt like just a passing conversation. But in the days that followed, I kept thinking about it.

Maybe it lingered because I often worry that chivalry is dead and that my girls might struggle with dating. I was blessed to have met really nice guys many moons ago when I was dating only to marry the very best. I want my girls to meet a companion who cares about them, considers them, and dotes on them, too. I pray often about it and whenever I notice the smallest, sweetest deeds from the younger generation, I soak them up, and I hope my girls see the potential and never settle.

Reggie reminded me that there are still good guys out there. It was a breath of fresh air to see young love in the way he looked at her, and in how he cared to show up for an artist he hadn’t even heard, simply because it made her happy.

I am also reminded that love looks like this, not just in young couples in photobooth lines, but in the everyday devotion of my husband, the kind of man who shows up, not for the music, but for the people he loves and I am so grateful.

Favorite Reads

Then again, maybe I won’t // This Judy Blume novel follows a young teenage boy whose family gets rich & the lifestyle change that follows. It’s obviously a YA book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not having a brother or son, it offered a different perspective for me. I learned more than I needed to about teenage boys, lol. Blume tells it like it is, always. That is why she is the best, though. She normalizes the taboo. I felt so sad for the kid for many reasons throughout the story, but Blume ties it up neatly at the end, at least for the kid. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Clover Girls // I love a good summer camp story and try to read one every year. I used to run summer day camps when I was a teen and loved it. It was a day of games, crafts, and laughter all day long. I never did a sleepaway camp, but I can pretend through my novels.
This summer camp-themed novel started strong but dragged on at the end. It follows three friends who return to the summer camp they attended in their youth. The setting is present-day, with flashbacks to their childhood. There was a lot of romanticizing the past, despite numerous mean girl antics. Those parts were cringeworthy. However, I mostly liked it until the end when I realized it wasn’t going in the direction I wanted. I expected there to be some redemption in their adult lives, but even though the ending was dragged out with camp games (I skimmed so much toward the end), it was rushed when it came to them all forgiving one another willy-nilly. I was hoping the women would show more maturity in their later years and set boundaries, especially Liz. I liked Liz the best. It’s about 100 pages too long (Kindle version) and didn’t end how I’d hoped, which is that they all became like the Golden Girls and lived + ran the camp they grew up in as children. Womp womp. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Durells in Corfu // I know I’ve already written about them in this post about my favorite TV dramas, but now that I’ve finished the entire series AND found out it was based on a real family, I’m even more in love. I’ve actually restarted watching it already and plan to own the DVD versions. I am also buying Gerry Durell’s series of novels that the show is based on. It is just the most wholesome, interesting, uncomplicated, unproblematic, loving, refreshing show I’ve watched in a long time. The characters, with their quirky flaws, are so likable. I just absolutely love it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Happy Gilmore 2 // My husband is a huge Sandler fan, so this was an obvious must-see in our home. I didn’t love that he killed off his wife, and I think it could have been about 30 minutes shorter with all the flashbacks, but overall, it was pure Sandler humor, and I enjoyed it. The flashbacks were a lot, and true fans didn’t need all that reminding. While the focus was on funds for his daughter’s ballet school, I thought his sons played a more interesting role. Between Haley Joel Osment’s character and Chubb’s son with his artificial hand, I was cracking up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

With Honors // This was my husband’s pick of the month. I’d never seen it and found it to be really sweet. It offered a great discussion with the kids, especially at the end when Joe Pesci’s character’s son rejected him. I loved Brendan Fraser’s role the most. His character’s moral courage throughout the film is sweet to watch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

My Cousin Vinny // Another Joe Pesci classic. My girls love a young Ralph Macchio ever since they read/saw The Outsiders. When two young boys get accused of a murder they didn’t commit, their slick cousin comes to the rescue. It’s a sweet, silly movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Stand by Me // This was unfamiliar territory for our kids, given the free rein the boys in this movie had. The vulgar conversations and cussing shocked them, lol! The boys venture toward finding the dead body and getting recognized as heroes for it, but there are obstacles in the way, including a nasty, older bully. It’s a heart-wrencher. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

CODA // What a brilliantly, thought-provoking story told through sign language. Their only daughter has the ability to hear, whereas the rest of her family does not, so they depend greatly on her help. When she is given the opportunity to attend college for singing, things become complicated. It is really well done, but you are obviously forced to pay attention and read the captions. I really enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I love it when I discover a show that is so smart and enlightening that I have to put my phone away to focus all my attention on it. These are six that I highly recommend if you like a dark plot.

Behind Her Eyes // This one came recommended by my sister, and it did not disappoint. It will keep you glued to the TV and on the edge of your seat, and as much as you think you’re paying attention, nothing will prepare you for the ending. One of the best plot twists ever. (Netflix)

The Fall of the House of Usher // I am a giant Edgar Allan Poe fan and figured this would be a typical retelling of his stories. I was wrong. Mike Flanagan has created the most intense, murderous, modern versions of Poe’s stories, bringing them to life in the best way. Not only does each episode re-tell one of Poe’s works, but the episodes tie together to make an entire series. I think Poe would approve. It is not for the faint of heart and is definitely full of adult content, so keep that in mind before watching. (Netflix)

Stranger Things // ’ve been a fan since its release on Netflix and can’t wait to watch the finale at the end of the year. The good news is that it took so long for the series to be completed that my kids grew up to be teens and were able to watch it with us all over again before the final release. We all love the characters and the 80s-era setting, with its mall and roller rinks. The demons are intense, and the heroes are lovable. The likable characters and silly humor spread between the violent action make it a well-rounded show.

Game of Thrones // Dragons, adolescent kings, and White Walkers (zombies), oh my! An oldie, but a goodie. Jaw-dropping, shocking, plot-twisting, disturbing, and smart TV. There is way too much plot to summarize, but it has stayed fresh in my mind over the years, thanks to the crazy characters and intricate plot lines. (HBO)

Squid Game // This is one I haven’t let my teens join in on watching with me, because it’s so violent and sad. There are no moments of joy in this series, as it reflects the greed and lack of humanity that exist in society. You grow to love the characters, only to watch them die one by one. You just don’t know how, and just when you think you’ve seen it all, you haven’t. It's one of my all-time favorites simply because it’s raw, honest, and clever. (Netflix)

Black Mirror // each individual episode reflects something futuristic, whether it be AI or space exploration. There is no telling what will happen in each episode. Every season produces a classic that sticks in your mind, especially as you see technology evolve in real life. Seems as though some of these show’s predictions are coming true. A few of my favorite episodes include: Nose Dive, Hang the DJ, Rachel, Jack & Ashley too, Beyond the Sea, Common People, and Bête Noire. (Netflix)

Another trip around the sun is always a reason to pause and reflect. Although I’m constantly working on myself, I can confidently say I’ve been blessed to experience quite a glow-up over the years — a transformation shaped by counseling, self-help books, manifestation, and faith in Jesus.

It’s in how we grow up, process our experiences, and learn to do better. It's understanding that the person we once were no longer exists, and there’s no harm done.

While a glow-up is often attributed to appearance, I’ve come to redefine it as any improvement that enhances one’s quality of life; it embodies us as a whole, from the inside out:

Physically

Spiritually

Emotionally

Intellectually

Socially

It’s celebrating good health.

It’s standing firm in your convictions.

It’s the blessing of a clear mindset.

It’s being open to different perspectives.

It’s building meaningful relationships.

It’s forming good habits.

It’s handling it with prayer.

It’s treating yo’ self.

It’s setting boundaries.

It’s practicing moderation.

It’s holding hope.

It’s maintaining composure.

It’s keeping things uncomplicated.

It’s not taking things for granted.

It’s not taking things so seriously.

It’s acceptance and appreciation.

It’s being intentional.

It’s radiating good energy.

And I am grateful to God daily for the good sense to do so.

Alice & Jack // This one is not for those who love a happy ending. It gives Sally Rooney vibes, if you’re a fan of her novels. The series follows a couple over many years, capturing all the drama that unfolds between them. I love the series's real, raw, and sensitive subject matter. Plus, Domhnall Gleeson is just fantastic. (PBS Masterpiece)

The Durrells // I just finished season 1 of this series on PBS Masterpiece, and I adore the family and all of their shenanigans. The setting is beautiful, both era and place. It’s a feel-good, comfort show, perfect for watching before bedtime.

The Way Home // The plot twists and time traveling are a lot of fun in this show! We watch it as a family and try to predict who will go where and what they will discover. My favorite era they travel to is the 90’s. It is definitely one where you have to put your phone down and pay attention to the details. (Hallmark)

The Righteous Gemstones // Adults only, for sure. The humor is crude and non-PC, with some major shock value, but I laugh so hard every episode. It follows a prominent family who runs a mega-church and all the shenanigans they get into. Hilarious. (HBO)

Over the Garden Wall // Another cozy, sweet, but wildly weird cartoon that follows two brothers on a crazy adventure with fun characters. At first glance, it appears to be a simple children’s cartoon, but its themes are profound and thought-provoking. The little brother, Greg, and his frog are my favorite and keep you smiling throughout. (HULU)

This Is Us // starring Milo Ventimiglia, is a heart-warming show that follows generations of one family and the people they encounter. The unexpected plot twists keep you binge-watching and will leave you with both happy and sad tears after each episode. Dan Fogelman is a skilled writer who does the characters and plot of this show justice. I’m re-watching it a second time with my teen daughters right now, and the conversations surrounding it are wonderful. I love hearing their perspective on the scenarios taking place in the show. (HULU)

I’m a collector of thoughts, gathered from conversations on TV, music, and real life. I jot them down in the Notes app on my phone to reflect on later, especially when they connect with something happening in my own life.

I’ve had this one: ‘private choices have public consequences’ sitting in my notes for a long while. It came from a reality show, in a conversation between a father and his daughter about her upcoming Senior Week. It made simple sense. A more graceful way of saying, ‘Don’t make a fool of yourself and embarrass your family.’

Although his advice was directed toward a young teen, it’s solid for any age.

That phrase stuck with me, especially now, as I’ve watched it play out in real life.

My best friend was recently blindsided by her husband’s affair.

Everyone around them is gobsmacked. Gutted.

It strikes me that maybe we’re at that age because my best friend is not the only one I’ve noticed whose wedding ring is missing, or whose significant other has been deleted from their social media. Is mid-40s mid-life crisis time? I hadn’t realized.

They’re now going through the mess that follows, the consequences of his actions, and the impact has radiated far beyond just the two of them.

I wonder if he even considered that his private choices, so secretive and deceptive, would have such public ramifications for his wife, his children, his mother, and all who loved him.

Hearing the toxic candid details and how calculated he was in hiding it spreads doubt. You start to wonder if it’s contagious. Could my partner be doing something similar? Maybe I’m naive? That kind of fear creeps in quickly, and it’s not fair.

The emotional whiplash has been real. He was the one who ran toward danger, who preached right from wrong, and we all admired. It’s hard to reconcile the family man we once knew with the one now acting like he’s the victim.

None of us is attending that pity party.

Instead, we are showing up for my best friend. We are protecting her, helping her find closure to move forward, and listening to her. We are supporting her in all her feels, and there are many. We are fulfilling her love language. We are taking opportunities to make her laugh. We are doing everything possible to help her reclaim her life and lay a new foundation. We are loving her through this and praying hard that the hurt heals quickly.
